A Labour of Love - Get to know Milly

Ahead of our latest launch with Milly Lewis Collections this Tuesday the 31st of August at 6.00pm I wanted to spend this time introducing you to the woman behind the brand and her amazing Gingham Sets

Milly and I studied at the architecture school together, which is where I first saw Milly's attention to detail but it wasn’t until at one of our close friends birthday celebrations in February this year that I saw Milly’s talent, her Gingham sets.

Milly was the first woman I had approached and it's where our partnership began. It's been an evolving journey ever since. I am grateful for the patience Milly has had with me and her admirable attitude towards life, especially considering the fact that we are still going ahead with our launch despite being in Aotearoa’s Level 4 Lockdown.

In a world where people are always wanting more, faster and cheaper, Milly has considered all aspects when it comes to Collection 01. These sets are limited and made from linen which has natural fibres that are extracted from flax plants. We are offering them in four colourways - Husk, ink, shell and blush. Handmade in her own home studio based out of Wānaka they are a labour of love and are pieces I feel very proud to be selling online here at Simple Studios

Creativity is something that I really value for not only our mental well-being but how it can really enhance our identities as women. I’ve asked Milly a few questions so you can get to know a bit more about her processes, inspiration and her expression of creativity and why she finds it so important for herself.

Where did the inspiration come from?

I’m inspired by the whole process of sewing. Working with fabrics and colours through each step; from the pattern making, cutting the fabric, sewing using different techniques, threads and tensions to get different outcomes and seeing the garment come together is liberating.

How did you get into creating these sets?

I have always been inspired by design and creativity. The creation of the Gingham Sets initially developed from the love of hand stitching face masks after lockdown in 2020. This evolved into making bucket hats and re-upholstery of old furniture I bought off Trademe.

What is one thing you are most proud of with Milly Lewis Collections so far?

I have learnt so much throughout the whole process, and probably doing it on my own has been something I’m quite proud of.

Where do you see Milly Lewis Collections going in the future?

The future of ML collections at this stage is to see where it goes and what I can explore, learn and create. I would love to keep the business small and do limited stock / made to order as well as putting methods in place to support the environment.

Collection 01 - The Gingham Series - will have zero waste. All offcuts and leftover fabric from the first drop have been saved and collected, ready to be incorporated into the next collection.

What is one thing you would like to share with someone who’s just starting out with their creative passion that would be helpful for them?

Do what feels right for you and what makes you happy. This was the foundation of what got me started, and from there everything has fallen into place.

It’s definitely daunting starting something on your own so collaborating with Sam from Simple Studios has been huge for me, she has been so supportive and has allowed me to really get all my ducks in a row to make this first collection possible.
