2022 is the year of you

By Kimberley Sare

After the last two years, anyone could be forgiven for feeling a bit flat as we near the end of the first month of 2022. Career uncertainty, the lack of a little stress-free time off, the isolation from whȃnau and friends both in Aotearoa and abroad; the list goes on. So, we’re here to tell you how 2022 is going to be The Year of You.

In 2022 we are:

· Going to work on accepting ourselves. This is a tricky one, and for that reason it deserves to be at the top of our list. We deserve to be kind to ourselves. I’m the worst person for some self-loving but even I can acknowledge that being unkind to ourselves is detrimental to all aspects of our hauora. So, let me introduce you to the idea of body neutrality. It’s not body positivity, but it’s not body negativity either. It’s simply accepting that you have a body, and it’s keeping you alive. That’s it. It’s not “fat”, and it’s not “thin”. It’s not “ugly” or “pretty”. It’s just a body, and we need to let it do its job. And then, once we can achieve and maintain body neutrality, we can start building ourselves up to take the next step towards some body positivity.

In 2022 we are not:

· Going to put ourselves in situations that make us unhappy. This, again, is easier said than done. Whether it’s your job or your living situation, or even something like the state of your wardrobe. 2022 is the year we start taking the steps towards increasing our happiness. As a starting point, perhaps brush up your CV a bit; you don’t have to apply for anything or start scoping out the job sites. Just a little baby step to get you moving in the right direction. Start putting an extra $10 aside to go towards a flat lease deposit. Get rid of five pieces of clothing. Baby steps.

In 2022 we are:

· Going to foster and build healthy relationships. After the last two years, no one needs to put up with shitty friends or relationships. Clear out the Instagram followers and Facebook friends. Tell your partner what you need to feel appreciated and supported in your relationship. Realise that blood doesn’t make family members entitled to treat you poorly. This doesn’t have to happen overnight. But this year, take the steps towards putting yourself first – if that means shrinking your circle, then so be it.

In 2022 we are not:

· Going to be put in a box by societal expectations. Wear those funky pants. Dye your hair. Don’t let people dictate how you express yourself. As long as you’re happy and not hurting anyone else, then go for it.

2022 is The Year of You!
